![]() In these cases, listed in table 2, the public and the political elite were able to find ways to reduce the tensions that have divided them. The data show that it is possible for democracies to depolarize. Table 1: Outcomes of Episodes of Pernicious Polarization The country experiences pernicious polarization and a downgrading of its democracy score. The country’s democracy is able to live with the chronically high levels of polarization without undergoing any democratic downgrading (to date). The country manages to depolarize but suffers democratically. The country manages to depolarize and keep its democracy intact.9įour basic outcomes were possible from this comparison, as reflected in table 1: ![]() 8 We then compared the trajectories of their democratic ratings with their levels of political polarization. To situate the United States’ experience within the broader universe of polarized democracies, we compiled a comprehensive list of episodes since 1950 when a democracy reached pernicious levels of polarization for at least two years. Political Outcomes of Pernicious Polarization The United States is in uncharted and very dangerous territory. Quite strikingly, the United States is the only advanced Western democracy to have faced such intense polarization for such an extended period. 7 Only sixteen episodes were able to reduce polarization to below-pernicious levels, and the decline in polarization was only sustained in nine of those cases. Severe polarization correlates with serious democratic decline: of the fifty-two instances where democracies reached pernicious levels of polarization, twenty-six-fully half of the cases-experienced a downgrading of their democratic rating. To rectify this gap, we used the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) data set to take a close look at episodes of pernicious polarization around the world since 1950 and trace their relationships with levels of democracy. Jennifer McCoy is a nonresident scholar in the Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program, where she focuses on political polarization and democratic resilience in the U.S. 5 Yet broader context for understanding how democracies fare when facing pernicious polarization is lacking. Comparative studies have already shown that pernicious polarization is directly linked with democratic erosion and that the United States is far from the only democracy to confront severe polarization. 4 The experiences of these other countries can provide useful insights into the United States’ own struggles-and may help to predict what may be to come. Many other democracies around the world have grappled or are grappling with the difficulties posed by the onset of pernicious polarization, which McCoy and Somer have defined elsewhere as the division of society into mutually distrustful political camps in which political identity becomes a social identity. 3 Polarization has already brought on serious problems-what more lies ahead? Are insights on this critical question available from the experience of other polarized democracies? 2 Even more concerningly, these dynamics are contributing directly to a steep rise in political violence. The rise of an “us versus them” mindset and political identity in American sociopolitical life is evident in everything from the rise of highly partisan media to the decline in Americans’ willingness to marry someone from the opposing political party. ![]() Yet these divides extend far beyond the corridors of power, as polarization at the mass level is pushing Americans across the country to divide themselves into distinct and mutually exclusive political camps. At the elite level, deep political divides in Washington have crippled efforts at legislative compromise, eroded institutional and behavioral norms, and incentivized politicians to pursue their aims outside of gridlocked institutions, including through the courts. The rise of political polarization in the United States has pushed analysts to ask a fundamental question: what long-term effects will polarized politics have on the United States’ democracy? 1 Existing evidence provides ample reason for concern. TickTick and Todoist handle subtasks differently. Again, a steep learning curve, but infinitely more powerful. Todoist filters also allow you to group criteria using parentheses as well as build an extensive list by combining queries. For instance, Todoist custom filters allow you to use NOT logic as well as the traditional AND and OR. While this requires a steeper learning curve, it’s also much more powerful. Todoist is only text based and requires you to be more invested in the logic of the filter. Advanced mode lets you get into AND vs OR logic based on various criteria. Normal gives you dropdowns and checkboxes to select which elements your tasks must have to be included in the custom list. TickTick offers normal and advanced options when creating custom filters. Custom Lists and FiltersĪgain, both apps are pretty close in this category. Additionally, Todoist allows you to color code labels, which can be useful visually. While TickTick keeps the tag text with your task which I found a little distracting, but can also be helpful. Todoist treats labels as metadata, so it’s not part of your task. Todoist’s labels can be selected from the available tags or you can start them with and type them in TickTick tags can be added by typing # followed by the tag (#tag). It also allows you to fully utilize custom lists and filters (see below) to find tasks in different lists or that share a specific tag/label. This expands the functionality from just a simple “to do list” to a simplified project management tool. Tags / Labelsīoth apps allow you to add labels or tags to your tasks. This helps you maintain the recurrence even if you miss a deadline. If you want to do a task every! three days, but don’t get the task done until the fourth day, the next occurrence will be three days from when you completed it. The distinction is that the exclamation mark will move the next occurrence of the event. Second, Todoist lets you use every! in addition to every. For example, every day until Friday would give you five occurrences of the task if today was Monday. First, you can put an end date on your recurrence and it will understand. Todoist seems to have a leg up with smart dates in two ways, however. TickTick also lets you choose whether you want the text of your date/time to remain in the task title, which is a nice little feature Todoist will remove it no matter what. Both let you choose which day is your start of the week, but only Todoist seems to let you actually pick which day of the week “next week” should be. In fact, both apps can even interpret “next week” and set the task due at the start of next week. It’s pretty incredible some of the plain English verbiage you can use that will be interpreted: every other week, mid January, in three days, etc. These are very powerful in that beyond the standard “tomorrow at 4pm”, they also recognize dates like “every thursday” or “next saturday”. What that means is that you can just type the date in the text of your task and both apps will set the date (and time) that you specify. Both TickTick and Todoist will default to the inbox if you don’t specify a project or list.īoth apps have “smart date” parsing available. ![]() If you’re like me, you focus on adding a task quickly and just have it dump to the inbox for processing later. Both have keyboard shortcuts available so you can simply type a task out and have tags/labels added, due dates, and moved to a specific project or list. TickTick has a box to start typing right at the top of the page, or you can hit n to bring up the quick add. Todoist has you click a + symbol at the top to popup a little entry box, or you can hit q to bring up the quick add. Without further ado …īoth Todoist and TickTick have quick and easy ways to enter tasks. If you don’t plan to pay for either premium version, I suggest you continue reading, decide which features are most important to you, and then compare the free versions of both ( here and here). My goal was to give people the tools to decide which of these two tools best meets their needs or fits with their process. I compared the premium offerings of both primarily in the web version but also on my Android phone (running Android O) this offered the best oranges-to-oranges comparison. I didn’t pick a “winner”, I merely compared offerings in several categories and then gave a few pros and cons of each. However, I had recently been hearing a lot of hub-bub about TickTick and decided to take a look at their offering and compare it with Todoist. I’ve been using Todoist for several months and am really starting to develop and trust my system with it. ![]() published_date | Publish on this future date.identifier-NEOS-catkey | NEOS catalogue key.Click and hold Notefile 2.5.1 icon with your mouse button until it starts to wiggle. Also kudos to Makino Yui, who was just really fun and easy to listen to. Fujiwara Natsumi is especially convincing in her role, bringing Chihiro to life outstandingly, being able to convey and portray a wide arrange of emotions delightfully, and making me forget I was actually listening to a grown up woman (which didn't really happen in the dub version, sadly). First off: every voice actor does an amazing job. The sound is one of my favorite parts of this anime. The use of CGI is spot on I generally cringe at the inclusion of random CGI on shows like these because they stand out and not in a good way, they just look forced and cut the natural flow of the animation, but Shounen Maid uses it sparingly and with great criteria. The coloring is AMAZING: the lighting and shading is great and accompanies the tone of the narrative at all times, making the emotional moments all the more poignant, and the lighthearted ones all the more so. The art is perhaps the weakest point of the work, and even then it's just because of how simple and commonplace the character designs could be, but they're truthful to the source material. The side characters are all very enjoyable, and though some could use more screen time, they all still manage to be treated respectfully at the end of the ride, there's no feeling that any one character could be disposed off and the show would remain basically the same. There's no what one could call an overarching plot, since it's a more episodic in nature show, but there IS a natural flow of events and developments that lead to a satisfying and cohesive narrative evolution. I can honestly say I've laughed and teared up in almost every single episode. the emotional struggles of both MCs, both grieving and adjusting to new situations. The show achieves the perfect balance between sweet, lighthearted comedic tones, and a more serious approach towards And it's done beautifully from beginning to end. This is one of those (rare in this medium and industry, I am extremely sorry to express) 'don't judge a book by its cover' cases, though: Shounen Maid is basically a gen slice of life show centering around family, friendship and mourning. ![]() I can get, however, where the reluctance to touch this show might be coming from, since 8bit produced it and the summary sounds like the premise to some terrible shotacon nightmare. 'Altered Carbon' starring Anthony Mackie has been canceled by Netflix after two seasons Netflix Previously, Netflix's head of original content Cindy Holland has explained what is known as the streamer's "efficiency matrix," which determines which shows get recommissioned and which get canceled. This meant that the number of viewers and subscribers it had to bring in to be viable for the streamer would have to be high. Numerous reports had it that the show cost an estimated $7 million per episode to make. In the past, Netflix executives have said that they make decisions about whether a series will be renewed or not by balancing how many viewers watch it and how many new subscribers it brings in with how expensive it is to produce.Īltered Carbon is thought to be one of the most expensive shows ever made. While those two seasons were canceled as a result of the difficulties of filming during COVID-19, there are thought to be different reasons behind the cancelation of Altered Carbon, which has been canceled for a more traditional reason.
